Reflection day 3

REFLECTION DAY 3:

For our last and final day of teaching we decided to do a cooperative lesson plan incorported with another group in the class and tie our topics together and for the students to learn how goods, services, producers, and consumers are interrlated through the process of the assembly line. We first started by asking the students if they remembered what is a good? what is a service? What is a consumer? what is a producer? One the students answered these questions by raising their hands and using their prior knowledge, we taught the students about how goods get from the factory to the consumer by sometimes using an assembly line. We then had the students get into groups of four and each student recieved a postit sticky note with a number on it, indicating what step they were in the assembly line. The first student was to fold the piece of paper in half "like a hot dog. The second student then took the same piece of paper and folded it in half "like a hamburger". The third student took the piece of paper and folded it "like a hamburger again". and the fourth student did the final process of "lifting the two flaps of the paper to be shapped like the letter T". Once the students were done with making the booklet, we had one student who represented the "mail man" who collected the good and was performing a service by then delivering the booklets to the store manager who also performed a service by giving the booklets to the students. To close up the lesson, and for a final assessment prior to the post test, we had the students write down what they learned in the booklets and draw pictures along with what they learned. We had them use the first page for what they learned about producers, the second page about what they learned about consumers, the third page about what they learned about goods, and the fourth page about what they learned about services. Overall, I thought that the groups worked well together and that the lesson tied togehter nicely. This was a good cooperative lesson plan for the students because they got to do the activity in a group setting, learning from themselves, as well as one another.

Reflection day 2

REFLECTION DAY 2:

For our second day of teaching, my group decided to do an inquiry lesson on consumers and producers being able to trade with other countries. To introduce our lesson, we got to students brainstorming and thinking about previous knowledge about producers and consumers from the previous lesson that we did with them. We discussed with the students that we are all consumers and in order to buy and recieve the products and necessities we need in order to survive, we need to rely on other countries to grow and produce certain foods, clothing, and products (providing a service) as well as our country need to produce products for other countries as well. In order for students to understand what products come from other countries and how the products get from one country to another we used a powerpoint with a lot of pictures to show the students how it works. We used the different continents of, Europe (makes jewelery), South America (cocoa beans), Asia (toys), Australia (coal), and North America (grains). Each student was then given a map with the different continents and were told to open their envelopes with the pictures of different products in it and place the product on the correct country where it comes from. If the students got stuck, they were told to look at the board and identify the picture with the corresponding continent. (Place icons where certain products are made on the map) After the students were done with the map activity, we talked with the students about different methods of transportation that can be used to get the products from one continent to another in order for everyone to be happy and get the things that they need to survive.  we wrapped up our lesson by talking about the results of our map activity and how producers and consumers tied into the activity. I believe that this lesson worked out really well because it was a well thought out inquiry lesson that  implied involvement that leads to understanding. The students made the connection with the pictures and the map in order to understand trading, producers, and consumers.

Field work reflection day 1

DAY 1 REFLECTION:

My groups first lesson went pretty well with the 2nd grade students at Bishop Dunn and i believe that the students learned a lot of new connections and knowledge from our lesson. We decided to base our first lesson on intoducing the vocabulary of producers and consumers and getting the students to comprehend the process of how cereal is made based on the 2nd grade topic of from the factory to you! We began our lesson by getting the students to use their prior knowledge and asking if anyone knew what a consumer was, following with the question of what a producer was. In addition to asking these questions we used a powerpoint with a lot of visual images and little information so that the students did not feel overwhelmed with a lot of information on the board beacuse they are only in 2nd grade. Once the students understood the difference between a producer and consumer, our group took turns reading a book to the students about how cereal is made. We discussed the process with the students about how the grains of the cereal are produced on a factory, then a truck transports the grains to the factory where the cereal is made, and lastly once the cereal is complete at the factory, the cereal is brought to the store where people (the consumer) can buy the ceral, take it home and eat it! After the powerpoint, we had the students do a hands on activity which i thought was very successful and we got the students under control and quiet by telling the students that only the people who sat quietly and raised their hand could participate in the activity. We had the students come up one at a time and place the pictures on the board in the appropriate order of from the the cereal starting on the farm and eventually being bought at the store. The students seemed to enjoy this activity and benefit from it. At the end of the lesson, we wrapped it up by adressing the producers and consumers and how cereal is made once more. I believe that our first day of teaching was a great experience and that our lesson made the students gain a lot of knowledge.
