Field work reflection

reflection 11/14/11

I like how the group used the two fingers up to indicate quiet time. I believe that this a great way to get the children to focus on the teacher's voice and that it is time to settle down, and get prepared for the lesson for the day. In addition, the students prior knowledge about learning about money was a good way to start the lesson to get the students brains pumping and get them to remember information about what they know about money. I think that this group did an extremely good job at keeping the class in control and quiet by telling students to raise their hand if they had a question but to keep quiet while the teacher is talking. The group used a bank powerpoint and included slides about where to keep money (piggy bank, wallet, bank savings or checking account), how to earn money (jobs, allowence), how to get income (services-jobs). The powerpoint was informative and appropriate for 2nd grade and incorporated what the students should know about money. They showed a video about dollars and cents, then asked the students questions about the video to assess their understanding of it (asked about deposit, cheicking, savings).
The other group spoke about countries and trading. They used a powerpoint to teach the students about trade. trade-good for good, good for service, good or service for money. They also talked about how to get from place to place in order to trade. At the end, for assessment they did a recap of what is trade? what can be traded? Lastly, a matching activity of job, service, transportation, trade was used with pictures for each catergory. I thought the matching activity was a great way for students to put together everything that they learned and show their understanding of the lesson given. Overall, the teachers did a great job and the students learned a lot from them !
